Workplace Killer Still at Large.

In recent news, 09 March 2011, the matter of asbestos continues to raise its ugly head with the cases of Mrs Willmore and Mrs Costello who sadly died through exposure to asbestos, in Mrs Costello’s case she is said to have come into contact with asbestos dust whilst in the workplace. Around 4000 people die a year in the UK from asbestos-related diseases many of these are tradesmen and women who just want to earn a living. So whether you are a plumber, plasterer, electrician, joiner or even a D.I.Y. enthusiast these have been the category of professionals  that have been most affected by this hidden killer. Awareness has been raised of the numbers of people still dying from asbestos exposure through the media including the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and ITVs former GMTV programme. Don’t be fooled by asbestos, asbestos is still the UK’s biggest workplace killer. Anyone working on a building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000 could be exposed to asbestos without knowing it, and it can take up to 40 years before any symptoms are displayed. The most simple, but important advice is if you are not 100% certain that there is no asbestos where you are working, then don’t start work, seek professional advice.
